My favorite fan edits are ones that create something original, something new from something old. We've seen fan edits that will add extended scenes to movies, that will cut things. And that's all fine and well. I'm thinking about doing one of those with "Boogie Nights." But once in a while an opportunity comes along to do my version of Food Network's Chopped but with the special ingredients being other movies. In this case, a sequel that no asked for (but didn't know you needed) from the Coen Brother's classic "Fargo."
Fargo was the Coen Brother's throwing down their gauntlet at Tarantino after Pulp Fiction took the cinema world by storm. And as a sublime movie, there's not much more you could ask for (though, for fun, I even did a fan edit of that anyways). But then F/X decided to make sequels of sorts to Fargo in the television long form. The first season (which is the best one) is definitely a decent sequel to the original. So hot on that success, the creators double-down with season 2, and even try to do a Tarantino version of a Fargo story but with a mixed results. It's everything but the kitchen sink thrown in, with a lot of misunderstanding of some of the Coen Brother's themes and tricks. Like the inclusion of a UFO in that season (which was obviously inspired by their movie "The Man Who Wasn't There.") But given how all over the place that season was, I saw some interesting fan theories about what the more esoteric moments meant, and decided there was a great story there after all. One that would be interesting hybrid between Fargo and genres you'd never expect in a crime thriller like this. Like sci-fi and monsters. Even Battlestar Galactica makes a cameo here since season 2 was about all things late 70s. Distilled to its best elements, with some scenes thrown in from Blair Witch creator Eduardo Sanchez's "Altered", my Fargo attempts to be a proper sequel to Fargo that intentinally goes off the rails, runs too long as a matter of choice, and even has fun with the title itself. All things I felt like would properly honor the Coen Brother's prankster side given their wonderfully cynical opinion about Hollywood and cinema.
