 +++THE  PITCH+++

V/H/S is that great rare example of raw true honest cinema IMHO. Doesn’t pull any punches. Free from corporate restraint. At least, that’s the idea… maybe it’s a corporation’s way of getting to buy it at least.

In any case, it works! Who doesn’t like the Twilight Zone or a good scary series of ghost stories? And taking a cue from the “Blair Witch Project”, the gamble here that pays off is making sure to ‘show us something’ rather than leaving it to our imagination. I’d argue, these ingenious series succeed in doing both.

The first one, and the best one, left big shoes to fill. So doubling-down, we get a sequel that brings in big name directors (like the director of “Blair”) and gives us more of everything we love about the first movie.

However, as I watched it I saw a subtext there that was missed opportunity. Whether they meant to or not, all the stories but one felt like different moments happening just before, during, and then after a global disaster (i.e. the gates of hell opening). Yet, turns out that was a happy coincidence. Like the Stephen King movie “The Mist” which was about another dimension leaking into our own, this movie felt like the supernatural equivalent of that, with demons, zombies and broken laws of physics flooding the planet. The first story felt like an eery foreshadowing of that, like a small quake before the big one. The second episode felt like it took place days after the gates of hell had opened, with zombies slowly taking over the world. The third story of course was the main event, as a doomsday cult opened said gates. But the final story was an odd (though well done) alien abduction story clearly inspired by the decent found footage movie “The Fourth Kind”. It just didn’t fit the tone of the other movies.

So… in comes fan editing to save the day. Yaah!

+++HIGHLIGHTS+++
-Replace the fourth story of “aliens” with “Parallel Monsters” from the third V/H/S movie. This works great IMHO as it seems to show the aftermath of the doomsday cult, years after an invasion of hell has overtaken the world. The perspective being from a scientist from another Earth multiverse that did NOT get invaded.
-Credits to reflect the changes of the stories.
-Little nips and tucks here and there that aren’t worth mentioning.

Enjoy!
