As part of my V/H/S fan edits, I decided to do a version 2.0 of the otherwise decent outing that is '99. I feel like the VHS series is the anthology series that the awful Greg Nicotero Creepshow WANTS to be. And V/H/S is this hidden treasure for peak cinema lovers, almost meant to be and feel like this underground genre (in physical form and tone, no less) for people that wouldn't even dare to expect corporate cinema to make for us. Because tbh corporate expects us to enjoy horror cinema to suck and enjoy it anyhow.
So, why the fan edit if this is sooooo perfect a series? Because there are some missteps here and there. VHS viral was OKAY but felt incomplete (hence my fan edit of it). VHS 2 is about as peak as you can expect from those guys, but felt unintentionally unified, and a theme of unification becomes something the creators decide to explore in later outings anyhow, so I decided to do them a solid and complete the thought there(see that fan edit). So, what about 99 bugged me enough to meddle with it? Well, if 94 is a return to form, I felt like 99 was designed to be that one two punch to scratch that itch of getting back to basics of what makes the series work and avoid that which does NOT work. But I found the opening story about a 90s punk band to be meh. It's done well. It certainly evokes the feeling of the 90s. But is opens this movie all wrong for me, and the other short stories are so strong that it seemed like a shame to me that there is this glaring misstep. So I removed it, and let the ghost story about sorority sisters as the opening act. So the overall content would not suffer from the loss of a story I got creative and found an oldie but goodie from a horror anthology show that was running in syndication during the 90s, and let that take the place of the removed story. The wraparound story that frames the short stories gave me an opening that was fun, creative, and interestingly sets up future VHS movies in a way I didn't even fully realize at the time when I was making this fan edit. In any case, the story of an Lovecraftian 'cancer' monster in the mode of Stephen King's "The Dead Zone" just fit in here nicely, given that this VHS outing is a bit anemic in the 'monsters' category. I've always loved this series because of the great monsters they feature.
In any case, enjoy!
